Handle Exclusions in AI Account Search

Natural language negation may not reliably enforce an account-search exclusion. Use explicit filters for exact rules and validate semantic exclusions against known examples.

Handle Exclusions in AI Account Search

“Find companies like Tesla, but exclude Tesla” combines two separate operations: semantic discovery and an exact record exclusion. A single natural language request can blur that distinction.

The reliable approach is to encode each requirement where the search system can enforce it.

Why negative wording can be ambiguous

A description containing a company or category still contains the associated concepts, even when preceded by “not.” Depending on the model and retrieval method, those concepts may influence the matches.

Generative models can also misinterpret an exclusion or apply it inconsistently. This is a potential failure mode, not a claim that all models always ignore negation.

Use exact exclusions for exact rules

Remove existing customers or named companies with an explicit domain or record-ID exclusion list. Normalize redirects and related domains where the account definition requires it.

A phrase exclusion can enforce that certain wording is absent from the indexed text. It does not prove that the underlying business activity is absent.

Validate conceptual exclusions

“Software vendors excluding agencies” requires a business-model distinction. Describe the desired offering positively, then use the available exclusion controls and inspect adjacent results.

DiscoLike supports domain, text, and keyword-based exclusions. These controls have different meanings; use the one that corresponds to the requirement rather than assuming a negative sentence is an exact filter.

Keep a small exclusion test set

Include obvious fits, obvious exclusions, and mixed businesses. Check that named exclusions never enter the final export, then review ambiguous semantic cases separately.

If a company both sells software and provides consulting, decide which activity qualifies it before changing the prompt. The model cannot resolve a business rule your team has not defined.

Try DiscoLike with your customer exclusion list and a known segment, then verify the final accounts before outreach.
